iOS 14 vs Android

A Deep Dive into iOS 14 latest features announced in WWDC 2020

Apple is here with another iOS version. As per the tradition Apple hosted Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) but this time with a digital twist due to the ongoing health crisis. Each year, Apple organizes a developer conference to announce the progress report of Apple.
The announcements at the online Apple Special Event included iOS14, iPadOS 14, watchOS 7, tvOS 14, macOS Big Sur, and Apple’s transition to custom ARM processors for their Macintosh family of personal computers.
But, the most talked features were of iOS 14.
Why iOS 14 is getting so much attention? The only reason is its similarities with the Android features. Apple released several new features in iOS 14 which were already provided by Android.

Similarities between iOS 14 and Android

Home Screen Widgets:

Finally, Apple allows users to add widgets to the home screen. After years of the static home screen, Apple adopted the widgets which were one of the most prominent differentiating between Android and iOS. Widgets in iOS provide third party support with customize size and gallery with previews.

App List View :

Apple users can now list all their apps in “the Apps Library”.It is quite similar to Google’s app drawer: a list of every app on your phone, regardless of its visibility on the home screen. Apple’s app library automatically sorts apps of different categories like social, entertainment, or Apple Arcade.

Third part email and browser apps

This feature of ios 14 defines Apple’s capability of sticking its users to Apple applications like Mail. But Apple now has decided to allow users to add third-party apps for browsing and mailing except for using Mail and Safari.
However, there are a few catches. iOS browsers still have to use Apple’s rendering engine and developers will have to update their applications to get this feature. Also, it’s limited to browse and mail apps, you still have to use Apple Music and Apple Maps even if you prefer to use Google Maps and Spotify.

Discreet Voice Assistants and Calls

Apple is debuting a new “discreet” view for Siri in iOS 14. Now, users can search for queries by tapping on the small icon present on the bottom of the home screen. The results of queries will be displayed in a smaller window at the top of the screen without blocking the rest of the display. It is similar to the Google Assistant on Android although the results are shown on the bottom in Android rather than the top as in iOS 14.
Apple provides the compact design of an incoming call which allows the users from blotting out the whole screens. The same feature requires permission in Android.

App Slices/ App Clips

The most interesting feature Apple has announced is the app slices or clips in which users can use an app without downloading it. Android users are already familiar with instant apps and app slices in Android Pie which were announced in 2017 and 2018 respectively. Let us see how this feature finally breaks through to the mainstream.

Cycling Directions

Apple Maps has been trying to catch up with Google Maps. Now, iOS 14 adds cycling features that give directions to the bike riders which includes factors like elevation, stairs, and bike routes. Although it is available in a few cities right now. Apple will be looking to catch up with Google Maps.

Translate

Competing with Google translate, Apple has launched its own translate application. In this application, users can translate spoken phrases and written texts into different languages. Right now, it supports only 11 languages.
Another integration is with webpages. Now, users can change the entire webpage to a language using the translate app in safari.

Picture in Picture

This feature is not new to Apple but it is new to iPhone series. In this users can run other apps while watching videos on the top. Also, It supports facetime calls. Now, you can chat without keeping the face time app open.
Android launched this feature back in 2017 with Android 8.

Password Monitoring

Password monitoring notify users about the passwords they are using is compromising with the data breach or not. This feature was launched at the end of last year by Google in its Browser Google Chrome. Now, Safari offers this feature with iOS 14 coming in.

Conclusion

In nutshell, Apple is trying to provide all the new features to increase the user experience on its services. But, Google always overtakes Apple in terms of features. Thus, Apple has to launch those features to compensate. Nevertheless, Apple leads the innovation market whether it be iPod or Touch ID.
